Bempton Cliffs RSPB Reserve - 2010
(Photo - Amanda Hayes)
-
Born - Cornwall, United Kingdom.
-
Birding - Introduced to me by a great birder & friend, Paul Gosling,
(former Northants Bird Recorder) whilst studying Conservation Management
together in 1987...I haven't looked back since.

-
Cornish Birding - Really enjoyed being part of the Cornish scene,
especially as a member of The Caradon Field & Natural History Club headed up
by Steve Madge with great characters such as Ray Gould (top birder!)
-
Best
find - Roller, May 1994 at Penlee Point/Rame, South East Cornwall.
-
Best
string - A Co-op bag (White in colour with 'Co-op' clearly printed on it)
blown across the road, was considered by me to be a definite, 100% Barn Owl.
-
Now
- I've lived in Suffolk since 2010 with my partner and fellow bird
photographer, Amanda. We feed off each other in our joint quest for flight
photography perfection...a long way to go, but we'll get there.
-
Before - Many enjoyable years involved within the birding scene in
Northants (special thanks to Jake Ward, Mike Alibone, Bob Bullock et al for
their help & support).
-
Voluntary conservation work - 1986 saw me spend a great summer at
Radipole Lake RSPB Bird Reserve in Weymouth...my regular outings on the beach
dressed as a Rook to promote the RSPB went down rather too well (dogs liked the taste of my legs and children enjoyed tripping me up
and generally giving abuse). 1987 - spring & early summer was spent at Kilcoole, South Ireland as a warden on a Little Tern breeding colony.
Other hands-on bird conservation work include time at Arne Heath,
Dorset for the RSPB, with many hours spent pulling invasive tree species
from the heath.
-
Voluntary surveying & architectural work for conservation bodies - Since
training formally as a surveyor I have given non paid professional time to
the RSPB (carrying out building conditional surveys on their built stock) -
this included prestigious buildings like the wc block at Titchwell RSPB
Reserve in Norfolk!!. I have also helped the National Trust by carrying
out measured surveys and alteration works to historic properties in Cornwall.
Most recently, I was involved with architectural work for The Wildlife Trust
in Northants/Peterborough.
-
Conservation - Enthusiastic about it?...DEFINITELY, however there is a serious side to my
character. Conservation is important to me.
I pass on my work to non-profit making bird conservation bodies free of charge.

I was so pleased when the
Norfolk Wildlife Trust decided to use my Common Tern image (above) on their new
membership leaflet...please join, it's well worth it!!

The Wildlife Trust for
Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire used my Barn Owl landing image
(above) as part of their Owl awareness campaign 2011-2012...as a supporter
of all the Wildlife Trusts & lover of Owls, I was very pleased to be involved.

Bird
photography - I am as keen as you're likely find anywhere and always try
to promote amateur bird photography & photographers where ever I go. I thoroughly recommend bird photography, it has had the added bonus of
gifting me with many new friends throughout the country.
-
Motivation - To be the best
flight & action bird photographer I can, not just in terms of images gained
but also by having a good attitude and outlook, the latter two being most
important to me.
-
Gear - Nikon.

Swallow in flight - Suffolk
